Peers used the G7 statement to push the Government on Ukraine, Sudan, the Middle East and defence, with the sharpest disagreement over how much more Britain should do on military spending, sanctions and Europe. Ministers said UK support for Ukraine would continue, backed a two-state solution and closer co-operation with the EU, and said the delayed UK-EU summit should happen soon, but several questions — including what “long-range capabilities” means for Ukraine and how far the G7 can still shape events — were left open.

Ministers said the Ministry of Defence will publish a defence investment plan before the NATO summit in Ankara, but opposition MPs questioned where the money will come from and whether the Treasury is doing enough to close a reported £28 billion gap by 2030. Reeves said Labour is delivering the biggest rise in defence spending since the end of the cold war, backed by cuts to overseas aid and work with NATO allies on shared equipment funding.
Commons · Commons Chamber · 23 Jun 2026
MPs argued over whether ministers are moving fast enough to rebuild the armed forces and meet rising threats from Russia and other hostile states. Conservatives and Liberal Democrats pressed for defence spending to rise to at least 3% of GDP and for a clear funding plan, while Labour said spending is already rising, recruitment and morale are improving, and the defence investment plan will be published before the NATO summit in Ankara. The main dispute was how quickly Britain should rearm and what, if anything, should be cut or rebalanced to pay for it.

Jo Stevens said the Government’s £50m defence growth deal would make Wales a defence innovation centre and create about 500 skilled jobs, but questions remained over devolved cooperation and a challenged Wales Office claim about the scale of spending.
Commons · Commons Chamber · 15 Jun 2026
Defence minister Luke Pollard said a fully funded Defence Investment Plan will be published before the NATO summit, covering equipment, housing, sites and personnel, but MPs questioned whether the package is enough to deliver the Strategic Defence Review, reassure industry and avoid gaps in major programmes such as the Global Combat Air Programme.
