David Lammy said the G7 strengthened support for Ukraine, sanctions on Russia and diplomacy on the Middle East, but MPs challenged him over defence funding, the delayed UK-EU summit, Gaza, Iran and the Strait of Hormuz; he promised a defence investment plan before the NATO summit and confirmed temporary licences for Russian fuel routed through other countries will end on 1 January.

Peers tested the Government on how to contain the conflict across the Middle East, from keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and stopping Iran’s nuclear programme to getting aid into Gaza, supporting Lebanon’s army against Hezbollah and tightening action on Israeli settlement expansion. The debate also exposed sharp disagreement over Israel’s right to defend itself, the two-state solution, and how far the UK should go in sanctions, diplomatic engagement and pressure on the Palestinian Authority.
