MPs pressed Rachel Reeves on whether her policies are easing pressure on household budgets, with John Lamont arguing taxes and energy bills are still rising and Josh Newbury asking what more is being done to help families. Reeves pointed to lower inflation, a £150 cut to energy bills in last year’s Budget, a new summer package reducing VAT on activities, £3 billion for local buses, and free bus travel for children this summer, while saying the Government would keep the triple lock and aim to lift children out of poverty.

MPs questioned the Chancellor on what the Government is doing to ease rising household costs in Falkirk, with Labour pointing to Budget measures such as higher minimum pay, the pension triple lock, free school meals and VAT cuts on some summer attractions. The main pressure point was whether any future help with energy bills should include working families, as concerns grow about prices later in the year.

Peers debated the Carbon Budget Order 2026, which would set the UK’s seventh carbon budget and end the use of overseas carbon credits for the 2028 to 2032 period. Supporters said it is science-based, legally required and needed to cut emissions by 87% by 2040, while opponents warned it would raise energy costs, weaken industry and force damaging changes in farming; Lord Moynihan pressed his regret amendment to a vote.

The weekly business session set out forthcoming debates on security, infected blood compensation, the Armed Forces Bill and spending, but most requests for new Government time were declined or redirected; ministers promised an autumn update and debate on youth inactivity after Alan Milburn’s recommendations, while offering no new statement on a Scottish independence referendum and no Government slot for a vote on the EHRC draft services code.
Lords · Grand Committee · 10 Jun 2026
Peers backed regulations extending the period Northern Ireland can use powers under the Energy Prices Act 2022 from 26 months to six years, so the Executive can develop its own energy policy and remove energy obligation costs from bills. Support was broad, but members pressed the Government on when the Northern Ireland scheme will be finalised, how it will tackle heating oil dependence and high fuel prices, and why the change is being made retrospectively from 3 April.
