Belfast disorder: policing, racist violence and immigration tensions
MPs condemned violent racist disorder in Belfast after a knife attack in north Belfast, backed the PSNI and asked how ethnic minority residents and health workers would be protected. The main divide was over whether the unrest should be tackled as criminal violence or used to press for tougher asylum, deportation and border checks; ministers said they would support police, work with the Home Office and Irish authorities, and act against those responsible.
