The Justice Committee said plans to cut a backlog of more than 80,000 Crown court cases risk overloading magistrates’ courts, weakening appeal safeguards and raising fairness concerns, and called for clearer evidence, parliamentary votes on any higher sentencing powers and stronger action on judicial diversity.
