Government under pressure to strengthen protection for ancient trees
Peers pressed ministers over whether current law is strong enough to stop ancient and veteran trees being illegally felled, after cases including the Whitewebbs oak and questions over planning protections in conservation areas. The Government said existing rules can bring unlimited fines and prison, but accepted more may be needed and said it will publish a tree action plan with new recommendations by the end of the year.
